As you all know Judge Sonia Sotomayor has been selected by President Obama as his nomination to the Supreme Court. She is currently going through the conformation hearings to see whether or not she will actually be appointed and bar a catastrophic gaff she will appointment to the bench is thankfully inevitable. Jeff Sessions is the committee's ranking Republican and is basically the standard bearer on who is qualified to be a Supreme Court Judge or not. But just who is Sen. Jeff Sessions? Is he a decorated war veteran? A good pious southern boy? Or is he a failed federal judge nominee who was not elected based on his views on minorities? Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner. Back in 1986 during his own conformation hearings he admitted to calling a white lawyer a "disgrace to the race" because this lawyer would actually represent African Americans. A U.S. attorney also testified that he had heard Sessions claim that he once admired the Klu Klux Klan. Sessions also allegedly referred to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) as "un-American" and "Communist-inspired" because they "forced civil rights down the throats of people." And according to his critics he demonstrated "gross insensitivity" to issues relating to minority groups. This is the committee ranking Republican, this is a U.S. Senator; people actually voted for this man. This is why it is so hard for me to have any respect for the Republican Party and anyone who is a part of it.
And you may very well argue that these were his views years ago and should have no bearing on the present and that he is a respected Sen. and has the integrity not to allow this matter affect his decision making. That is well and fine and a great way to normalize a racist but the Republican Party will not grant the same respect to Judge Sonia Sotomayor because they feel that her race and her gender will inevitably play a role into her decision making. Well, naturally it makes sense a racist is able to separate his hate for minorities, his gender, and his race but a decorated Latina Judge is not. Great job.
